OFFICE HOURS, Lyore & Sigal Friedmann, GLŌAM Goods

Names: Sigal and Lyore Friedmann

City of Residence: Santa Barbara, California

How do you spend your days? We are a mother daughter duo who make beeswax candles for our company, GLŌAM Goods! Sigal (mom) is the candle maker, and Lyore (daughter) takes care of everything from marketing, to wholesale outreach, to socials and more. What does a typical work day look like for you?

Sigal: A typical day in the studio usually starts with  melting wax in the early morning while mixing the color that will be dipped that day. Once the wax is melted, I hand dip the candles up to 35 times depending on the style of the candle, and leave them to cure for 24 hours. It’s a slow and meditative process. Other days are all about color development for wholesale clients, or new collections, on these days I melt  wax and play around with plant dyes and different color variations. Where is your office located? Our studio is located in our backyard in Santa Barbara between our fruit trees, and our chicken coop! We love the proximity to the kitchen for cheeky coffee breaks. How do you keep track of your to-do list? Good old to-do lists on sticky notes which sometimes end up stuck on random places they don’t belong- but we do our best to hold each-other accountable as well!Daily work uniform, head to toe?

Sigal: I usually wear vintage worn in jeans, a T-shirt, and a linen apron. Beeswax ends up adorning every working outfit, so I like to keep things comfy.

Lyore: I love to feel cozy when I’m working, so I usually pair a soft chunky knit with some boyfriend jeans and I love a good fluffy pair of house shoes( the beauty of working from home!)

Must-have item in your work bag?

Lyore: I am always carrying candle samples in my bag because you never know when you might drive by a cute boutique. I also always carry a notebook for reminders and ideas that pop-up as well. Most productive time of day for you?

Sigal: Morning afternoon evening and night (so basically 24/7!) - I tend to get in a candle dipping flow and lose track of time.

Lyore:  Usually around 10:00 am once I’ve moved my body and consumed an adequate amount of caffeine. I always get a second wind late at night.Favorite part of having your own business? Most challenging part? The best part is working together- we’ve always had a really close relationship so getting to spend hours of creative moments together has been really special. We are new to having our own business and are a 2-woman show, so we have had to learn a lot in a short amount of time which can be challenging - but we are learning by trial and error and trying to stay patient and positive with lots of humor and cuddles with our dogs to decompress. Favorite mid-afternoon pick me up during a day in the office? Iced oat matcha with a shot of espresso- might sound wild but it’s so so good! Name one thing that is always on your desk:

Sigal: Wax swatches and a ruler

Lyore: A lit meditation candle and my doodling pad 3 Tabs Always Open on your Browser: E-mail, Shopify, and photoshop

Top tip for entrepreneurs: Connect with other entrepreneurs who are at different stages of starting a business. Some of our most cherished friendships (Jaymee Harney is one of them) budded through connecting with other women who are creating, and it’s so helpful to bounce ideas off of eachother, and celebrate each other's growth and evolution. What’s something you do outside of work just for yourself?

Sigal: Painting on large canvases and plant dying fabrics

Lyore: Moving my body (pilates, spin, yoga), and trying elaborate new recipes that have one too many steps. Who are you sending your next card / [love] note to? Sigal’s husband and Lyore’s dad Michael! His birthday is coming up and he is GLŌAMS biggest supporter and hardest working order packer :)

Sigal (sister-in-law) and Lyore (niece) are amazingly creative and dedicated to excellence in everything they do! So happy that their beautiful candles are appreciated by the many who are buying them as fast as they can produce them! Testament and recognition to the effort and creativity they put into each of their candles! Wishing them much continued success and thankful to those who enjoy the candles in their homes!
